The Tamil name for Fennel is "Perunjeeragam". Literally the Tamil name means bigger seeragam (seeragam = cumin).
In present day, Tamil cuisine and in general Indian cuisine, fennel plays a major role.
In Tamil cusine, there are various ways of using Perunjeeragam:

Fennel seeds: A few fennel seeds are fried in oil before making certain dishes. Eating few fennel seeds helps in digestion.

Powdered Fennel seeds: Fennel seeds are dried, milled and powdered. This is the most common form of use.

Sugar coated Fennel seeds: Raw fennel seeds are sugar coated and fried. This is used as a mouth freshener as well as they are good for digestion. Most of the restaurants give this to eat after meal.
