Karam podi

Karam podi or Karrappodi is Chilli powder or Red chilli powder.

Chilli powder is used to make many dishes. Basically when you want to add some spice to a dish (irrespective of veg or non-veg), then add chilli powder. Chilli powder also adds taste to non-vegetarian food. Without chilli powder the taste of non-veg food will be bland unless you use pepper.

As you could note in the spices section of chilli and pepper, in olden days, Tamil used only pepper.
